Fire Department (San Ramon Valley Fire Department)

Short description

Lucas Hirst and his team did a fantastic job developing this app (more about the team here). The tagline for the app is "There is a hero in all of us" and this app is actually providing people with an opportunity to be a hero.

By providing a virtual window into San Ramon Valley’s 9-1-1 dispatch center, app users now have real-time access to emergency activity occurring in the community.

This is what the SRVFPD wrote themselves: "In the spirit of “Gov 2.0” the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District (SRVFPD) announced a location‐aware iPhone application in January 2011. The new app empowers everyday citizens to provide life‐saving assistance to victims of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).

Application users who have indicated they are trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can now be notified if someone nearby is having a cardiac emergency and may require CPR. If the cardiac emergency is in a public place, the application, using sophisticated GPS technology, will alert citizens in the vicinity of the need for CPR. The application also directs these citizen rescuers to the exact location of the closest public access Automated External Defibrillator (AED)."

The best with the app/supporting initiative

+ It makes needs in society visible and show that it is possible to be part of the solution.
+ It allow people to help other people and see that we live in a society where caring for each other is not such a bad idea.
+ It supports the idea of people as heroes that can do something good.
+ It is a welcome move beyond "slacktivism" where people only press on the screen/keyboard to sign a petition.
+ Obviously it can also help save lives.

The weak parts of the app/supporting initiative

- Only available on the iPhone
- Do not discuss the need to have public service for everyone so that these kind of volunteer initiatives are used as an excuse to cut spending in ways that reduce the services for those in most need.

What could accelerate this app/supporting initiative into a world changer?

> Track the actual results of the app
> Follow the level of service over time so that people can the need for taxes to help with important services in society.
> It could link to other apps where people can contribute and then rank those helping so that the people contributing in society are acknowledged.

Delivery

How direct is the delivery of the result the app tries to achieve
  • Direct
  • Indirect
  • Inspirational
  • Long shot

Comments

When it words it can hardly be any more direct delivery as a persons life will be saved though the app.

Transformative approach

How transformative is it
  • A new world
  • A major shift
  • A bit of a shake-up
  • A gentle rocking

Comments

It allows us to see needs in society and be part of the solution. But it is not global in any way, for natural reasons.

How much does it encourage collaborations

How much are new networks supported
  • Strong support for global networks?
  • Currently encourages new forms of collaboration
  • Provides interesting opportunities in the future
  • Restricted to a small (expert) group

Comments

It is interesting as the use is not very collaborative, but the whole idea builds on the vision of a critical mass of volunteers that ensure that the system works.

What synergies can be delivered

How well does it also solve other problems/generate solutions
  • It solves everything
  • Several important challenges
  • Some important challenges
  • Only one challenge

Comments

Coming together and encouraging heroes could be transferred to other areas.

Nine billion contribution

How global is it? Is it helping/will it help everyone on the planet
  • Instant global equality
  • Almost global
  • Getting (incrementally) global
  • Not applicable

Comments

It is not very global, and it is easy that this kind of app become part of a culture where the direct problems around the rich population in the rich part of the world is in focus.

Building on current trends

How well does it use current trends
  • The app is setting new trends by itself
  • Building on multiple trends
  • Effectively building on one trend
  • Not really building on any major trend

Comments

Transparency and doing something heroic is taking the "reality" trend and turning it into something valuable.

Timeframe

How fast can it deliver
  • It's already happening
  • In the coming weeks
  • In a year or so
  • In a distant future (hopefully)

Comments

Actions to help each other in a transparent way can be the start of something very interesting.

Transparency

Does it support transformative transparency
  • Brave new transparency
  • Transparency that is innovative (never seen before)
  • Increased transparency, but nothing innovative
  • No increase in transparency

Comments

To make the needs in society visible and allow people to act is a very interesting way of creating a race to the top. Hopefully this could result in a discussion between people what they are doing to contribute to a better neighborhood as well as planet.
