Winners in the the World Bank competition: Apps for Development

The World Bank just released the winners in their “Apps for Development” competition. I have been really surprised by the lack of apps/app developer that do innovative apps to help reduce poverty. Most of the apps are simple fundraising tools or basic information.

While I’m not very impressed by the structure and focus of the competition (play with data and make it look nice) it is still one of the few initiatives to promote app development that focus on poverty reduction. Hopefully next year WB or someone else will focus on apps that can actually help people move out of poverty in new innovative ways.

Maybe the great movie “End of Poverty”, that now is available for free on YouTube, can inspire?
